Sally-Ann Davies is a printmaker based in Lake Taupo, New Zealand. She specialises in monoprinting and woodblock printing.
Sally-Ann is a country girl at heart, and grew up on a dairy farm in England. She roamed the fields, woodlands and rivers of her backyard. However, Sally-Ann witnessed the world in a different light, when she was a child, her vision was already impaired, and at 12 years old, her left eye's retina detached.
After this incident, determined to engage with life, Sally-Ann turned to drawing and painting. She went on to move to Liverpool, and complete a BA (hons) in Fine Art. With her next chapter she became an artist-in-residence in an inner-city school, which ignited her passion to teach.
As the years passed Sally-Ann's eyes were deteriorating due to cataracts. In February 2011, after a life-changing surgery, Sally-Ann's world suddenly burst into colour. Natural elements, rain and sun create inspiration for her printmaking.
To capture such a scene, she explores the unpredictable and imperfect processes of printmaking. Often combining different traditional techniques, such as monoprinting to capture subtle colours and light; collagraphs to add texture and depth. Woodblock printing gives her work definition by focussing on the linear patterns and contours within the landscape.
For Sally-Ann, getting her eyesight back sparked a flame to focus on her passions again. Sally-Ann strives to take responsibility for the life she wants to lead.
