'Toomaths Building'- Limited Edition, Fine Art Print
The Toomaths Building was designed by architect William Crichton, completed by 1901.
The building was named after Edward Toomaths. “Edward Toomath was an early Wellington settler, and is regarded as “the father of education in New Zealand.” Born in 1817, Toomath was educated at the Battersea Training Institute, following which he spent a few years as a soldier. After teaching for some time in London and Northampton, he was selected by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK) as the first certificated teacher for New Zealand. He arrived in Wellington on this mission in 1850.”
Regrettably this beautiful building was demolished in October 2023, due to years of neglect and fire damage it became beyond rescue.
