"How much fun are these classic cabins? I found these at Seaview campground at Mokau, on the Taranaki coast north of New Plymouth. These iconic beauties hark back to a typical kiwi 50’s style, when baches (or cribs) were basic, simple affairs. And with a view like that, what more do you really need?
We stayed in the green cabin one December a few years before. The pohutukawas were in bloom that time, but Mount Taranaki was hiding behind heavy clouds, so I had to leave it on my list with the plan to return at a later date. Oozing so much character and set in such a stunning location, I knew there was a great image waiting to be captured, if only I could time it right with the weather...
So a few years later when I neared the coast on this autumn day in May ‘24 and saw that Mt. Taranaki was in the clear, I got excited. The air was absolutely crisp and the light was simply beautiful. But standing beside this yellow bach Sunshine, the ground was too low for me to see the mountain, dammit! But I wasn’t going to give up that easily, I borrowed a chap’s ladder and bingo, there was Taranaki, rising up on the left of the cabin SkyBlue. Now that’s what I call Picture Perfect!"
