This work represents a pepeha, which reflects your whakapapa (where you are from and who you are).
- Maunga (Mountain): Represented by the shape of the holes.
- Awa (River): Represented by the cut lines extending from the holes.
- Waka (Canoe): Reflected in the overall shape of the piece.
- Hapū (Family) and Iwi (Tribe): Represented by the rope binding along the top.
The piece is crafted from Tōtara salvaged from the Manawatu River, which gives the timber its distinct chocolate color.
Exhibition Statement - Derived from Nature
Derived from nature, my practice centres on working with native and exotic timbers. I use reclaimed and recycled wood to create contemporary toi māori artworks that reflect ideas of sustainability, care, and kaitiakitanga. Through my sculptural practice, I explore the natural warmth, texture, and character of wood, bringing together ancestral stories and contemporary forms. My work celebrates the relationship between people, materials, and whenua.
About the Artist
Shannon Turuwhenua is an award-winning wood sculptor based in North Waikato, Aotearoa (New Zealand). Drawing deeply from his Māori (Tūhoe), Scottish, and Irish descent, his work is a powerful exploration of heritage and identity. His process is intrinsically linked to the land, beginning with the mindful sourcing of native and exotic timbers from across the country. Whenever possible, Shannon uses reclaimed and recycled wood, ensuring every handcrafted piece carries an added layer of history and is truly unique. His work consistently explores themes of cultural transmission and sustainability.
