Hamilton based artist and creator of Pania + Pepe, Nicola Upson began her career in floristry at the age of 15, where she created floral designs for people’s homes, weddings and special occasions. As a florist and a business owner she developed a deep appreciation of colour, texture, craftmanship, natural materials and thoughtful handmade designs.
These skills and artistic influences naturally evolved into the creation of Pania + Pepe, a representation of mother and child, inspired by her life in New Zealand. The traditional peg doll is something she grew up with and she has reimagined this nostalgic from in a way that celebrates aroha.
Each Pania + Pepe is individually handcrafted using natural materials wherever possible. Nicola’s love for traditional workmanship is reflected in Pania’s korowai which is made from New Zealand retro blankets, weaved from New Zealand wool.
Through Pania + Pepe Nicola has created a keepsake that tells a story, is meaningful and connected to New Zealand.
