About the Artist: Justin Kite (Ngati Kahungunu)

In my latest work I am exploring the symbiotic nature of huia. A beautiful taonga of high rank. The male and female depend on each other to survive. The short, strong beak of the male would break up the decaying wood, and the long, curved beak of the female would probe deep into the crevices to collect the insects and larvae inside.

These majestic manu were tapu, and unfortunately prized for their tail feathers, now extinct for over a hundred years, (1907 was the last sighting). These anthropomorphic Huia denote human relationships and lives, and the game symbols, life and love, the ups and downs, winners and losers.

These are statement pieces, framed in native recycled timber.

I have taught Art and Design for 20 years, including in Shanghai for almost five years. Had several sculptures, mural and design commissions. Been a finalist in EAST, HB Review, NZ Art Show, Eden Park, Art in the Park, and had a children’s book published, Even Tigers Need to Sleep’.
