Dunedin based artist Nic Dempster has been part of the city’s art scene since the early 2000s. His distinctive art is well recognisable and has always been popular. Originally painting city and rural scenes, his bold cubist influenced style has developed over recent years to reflect his love for architecture, colour and design. It also plays with ideas of urbanisation, the impact it has on the natural environment as well as the kiwi infatuation with property.

Nic has worked in commercial art galleries on and off from the age of 19. He gained a Masters History at Victoria University in Wellington in 2007. Whilst living in the UK where he worked with artists in a gallery co-op in Whitstable, Kent. More recently he did a short term as President of the

Otago Art Society before the birth of his son in 2018. His works sit in private collections up and down the country as well as internationally. Nic is represented in Dunedin, Oamaru, Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland. He and his husband, Simon, and son live in Flag Swamp, north of Dunedin. With this move to the country, Nic has come full circle to be back where he grew up as a child. Nic opened his studio to the public in early 2023 and has a small attached gallery for patrons and visitors to view his work.
