Artist Statement

When I began working on “The View,” which looks out across Oriental Parade in Wellington, I was guided by memories and the stories I’ve carried with me - those shared by family and friends, both from the past and the present. Their presence is woven through every brushstroke, and they became a constant thread in my process. I felt driven to capture the houses as faithfully as possible, though I know they aren’t rendered with absolute precision.

Photographs helped shape the concept, but what struck me most was the natural, organic change always at play in this area - the way trees appear or disappear, homes are repainted, and sometimes entire buildings vanish, replaced by something new and unfamiliar. That sense of constant transformation fascinated me.

I realised, though, that I didn’t need to include everything as it stands right now. I wanted this artwork to feel as though I had sliced away a particular moment from one distinct dimension - a version of Oriental Parade that blurs together memory, observation, and imagination. In this space, the essentials remain, and all that’s unnecessary gently falls away.
