Nicholas Duval-Smith was born in Dunedin in 1969. He studied at the Otago Polytechnic School of Fine Art from 1988 - 1990, majoring in sculpture, and again from 2007 - 2008, majoring in Jewellery. He has exhibited in Dunedin, Wellington and Auckland, and lives in Motueka.
In his practice as an artist, Duval-Smith aims to express beauty, freedom, and playfulness, and hopes to evoke these qualities for those who participate in his work. Participation is a key outcome for Duval-Smith; often, his work encourages interaction.
